DATA CENTERS ARE DESTROYING OUR PLANET. We’re BUILDING a global movement to stop them.
Data centers are destroying our communities. They’re subverting local democracy, eliminating local jobs, and concentrating power in the hands of tech companies. This is tech fascism.
Communities are fighting back and winning. Join the Data Center Rebellion.
How Data Centers Destroy Communities
-
Data Centers are tech fascism. They’re destroying communities around the world and concentrating power with tech billionaires.
They’re using their power and influence to bypass democracy, environmental laws, and local rules. They’re not good for our communities or our environment.
-
That statistics and research are clear. Data centers consume massive amounts of fresh water and power.
Don’t believe us? Don’t listen to industry spin. Check out these independent reports from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in the United States and Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives in Canada.
-
Data Centers create significant amounts of noise pollution, they don’t create long-term jobs, and they consume massive amounts of water and energy.
Communities are clear. We don’t want these massive profit centers that enrich tech billionaires in our backyard.
-
In Canada, you’ll hear corporate talking points from industry and government that data centers contribute to tech sovereignty. This is nothing but industry spin.
Data centers owned by multi-national companies and investors only concentrate power with tech billionaires.
If our governments were serious about tech sovereignty they’d be investing in public or community owned data infrastructure.
-
Our history is clear: corporations maximize profits at the expense of our communities and health.
Data centers are a new form of profit extraction from our neighbourhoods.
“Not In My Backyard’ (NIMBYISM) fight progress or development in their neighbourhoods. Our campaign says No Data Centers everywhere.
We call on our governments to invest in public and community owned services and infrastructure.
-
“Data centre developers often over-promise or adjust job estimates in order to placate local opposition, so job estimates should be taken with a large grain of salt.” ~ CCPA
Industry insiders intentionally bend the truth. They’ll talk about all of the new construction jobs, but they don’t highlight long-term job creation.
A public library, affordable housing, or new public services will create just as many construction jobs and more long term benefit. Don’t believe industry spin.

This great article from Reset.org outlines a road map for community-owned and community-accountable tech infrastructure.
Whether community-owned cooperatives, indigenous tech sovereignty, or fully public utility ownership there are real alternatives to the current profit-driven corporate ownership model.
